House on the Hill

Silhouettes, those objects, people or scenes rendered as solid shapes, can often tell a story without the intricate detail of most photographs. This form of art was quite popular in the late 18th century when artist would sketch people's profiles and fill them in with a solid color, usually black. The image was then cut out and placed on a lighter colored background. With today's DSLRs this process is quite easy. The "House on the Hill" image below was created by simply placing the subject between the rising sun and the camera.

Seldom do I leave silhouettes totally blacked out as just a hint of detail seems to make the overall image more interesting.

This property sits high atop a very steep hill, most of which I have cropped away, and is positioned at an elevation above the horizon. It must be quite interesting to look downhill at sunrise regularly, a real treat for the occupants. I have passed this location many times and often wondered what the view from the top must be like.

Unfortunately, access to the property requires permission to navigate a long winding private road to the top. A long cable with a sign simply stating "Private Property" seems to indicate that the owners are not much for company. :-)
