Stewartstown Railroad Company

In a previous post we had a look at a historic landmark, which began operations in 1885. The Stewartstown Railroad Company appears to have passed into history at first look, but a closer examination reveals that it remains in operation. Each time I have passed it's location in southern York County Pennsylvania, rail cars and other rail yard equipment has been moved around or completely changed. Yes, there are signs of life here, although the company's future remains uncertain. A serious derailment (2004) and the after-affects of hurricane Agnes (1972) left much of it's rail access limited and attempts to regain connections with the Pennsylvania Railroad and other access routes have been an ongoing challenge legally. But through all of this, the railroad remains in operation and retains it's limited right-of-way with the unwavering dedication of stock holders and volunteers.

Above is an image of the station and offices. The building, built in 1914, looks to be in great shape physically, despite the obvious cracks and crumbling of the foundation's perimeter. I peeked in a window and the interior looks very nice as well.

Below, we zoom in for a closer look at a street-side shipping & receiving doorway and dock area. There was a distracting "No Skateboarding" sign on the door, which I removed in Photoshop.

As a longtime fan of railroads, I truly hope the Stewartstown Railroad Company continues to operate and will someday return to prominence. I understand that an occasional excursion is conducted and I will be checking into this, as I would love to take a ride through the back country on this historic railway route.

Thanks so much for visiting!
