Ships

Maersk Line

Like many, I have always enjoyed seeing ships at sea. There is something special about these huge vessels moving gracefully across the water in silence.

The 120-foot motor yacht Reef Chief is a beautifully designed luxury vessel that I have been seeing in Baltimore's inner harbor for many years. I have also noticed that it is away from its usual berth in Baltimore for long periods of time and wondered if it spent winter months in the tropics or sailing the high seas to other global locations.

Baltimore celebrated the 200th Anniversary of our National Anthem with a "Star Spangled Spectacular" event (Sept 10-16) with a week of activities. With Baltimore's long and rich maritime history, this provided another opportunity for the much beloved tall ships to sail into town, right out of the history books.

USS Constellation Docked

One of the major attractions for tourist visiting the Baltimore Inner Harbor is the USS Constellation, the last Civil War vessel still afloat. Built in 1854, it instantly transports you back in time when you see it. From any angle, it strikes an imposing view as she sits docked at Pier 1. I have posted about this historic vessel before, most recently about one year ago here. It's also posted in the Photography Chat Community of Google Plus. Today we share a pre-dawn image taken from the top of Federal Hill, located across the harbor and south of Pier 1. I zoomed the 18-200mm all the way out to capture the scene below.

In 1994 this ship, now on the National Registry of Historic Places, was condemned as an unsafe vessel. Her future seemed to hold a trip to the scrap yard but a $9 Million dollar restoration project was undertaken, and this great vessel was saved.

This shot was a 20-second long exposure and was processed in Photoshop CS6 where it received a generous crop. Afterward I used the Oil Paint filter and the new Blur Gallery to reach this final look.

Thanks so much for visiting!
