C & O 490

Resting on the Rails

In this post we once again return to the rail yard of the B & O Museum in Baltimore. As in a previous post, we have a look at a few of the rail cars that are simply resting on the rails while awaiting some form of disposition. Many of the really old cars will hopefully end up in the shop where this old workhorse now resides. The yard is filled with old vintage railroad hardware, as well as more modern models as well. So here is a peek down the yard from just above the rails.

Have a great day everyone!

C & O Locomotive 490

Built around 1926 by ALCO, the C & O ( Chesapeake & Ohio ) Railroad locomotive number 490 was an awesome sight with it's sleek styling. Trimmed in stainless steel and polished aluminum this machine continues to be a work of art. Today, C & O 490 can be found in the B & O's (Baltimore & Ohio) Passenger Car Works shop on the grounds of the museum in Baltimore Maryland. Yes, this is a museum piece now and the fact that it now rest indoors may mean that it's that much closer to restoration. Just two years ago it was parked out in the elements like C & O 1309.

When you enter the building, which I'll show in a future post, this massive machine just grabs your attention. It's a beast! :-)

I truly hope they restore this to it's glory days.
