Carter's Creek

Out of the Blue

After a perfect summer day, I recall hanging out and enjoying the approaching night fall on Carter's Creek in Virginia.  I had been out from before sunrise boating and visiting friends along the Northern Neck and the day was rapidly winding down. But I could not resist the urge to get a few night shots, like this Blue Hour shot and this Edge of Night image. Today I share another of the many from that fun-filled day.

After docking we were simply milling about after unloading and finishing off a few cold ones when the boat in the foreground began to really stand out under the lamp post on the dock. It looked totally different than 30 minutes before, no doubt the effect of the now subdued lighting. I was particularly drawn to the teak wood across the stern and the name, "Out of the Blue".

This image was processed back during the summer and placed in my "To be posted" file, so I am unclear as to the exact process. I am however, certain that Topaz Adjust was applied to some degree.

Thanks so much for visiting and I hope you have a great weekend.

Up the Creek

Up the Creek
Up the Creek

You have likely heard the term "Up the Creek" many times, usually meaning that one is in a troubling situation with no way out. In this post, the term takes on a more positive annotation as it simply refers to the location of a couple of sailboats I came upon in the early morning sun while out boating.

As the sunlight filtered through the trees, one of the most beautiful mornings anyone could ask for unfolded before my very eyes. I was literally up the creek, as this is the very end of the waterway with no place else to go but back down stream and into the larger body of water known as Carter's Creek.

I recall it being so peaceful and quiet, only interrupted by the occasional sound of fish breaking the water as they fed on bugs along the surface. This fond memory is heading to the print shop and afterward, will reside on a wall space in my office.

The image was created from a 3-shot bracket (-2 to +2) which was hand-held. During post-processing the bracketed shots were aligned in Photoshop prior to the application of my usual treatments.

Down by the Riverside

Today's image is from one of my favorite hangouts along Carter's Creek in the great state of Virginia. You can see a couple of previous images here and here. With another trip to the Northern Neck scheduled soon, I thought I would share this shot here today. The sun has just dropped over the horizon to the right and the first hint of the blue hour has began to show in the sky above. The blue hour supplies a surreal type of overhead lighting that is great for details and colors, often yielding unique scenes with hues of awesome purple and blue. This is no doubt one of the best times for photography.

That lovely home across the creek was worked on during it's construction by my long-time fishing pal and great friend Joe Woods. Joe was a Master Carpenter who left us too soon a couple of years ago. But like my old pal, this area brings me many great memories.

The Edge of Night

Welcome back photography lovers! I hope all is going well for you.

Today's short post features an image taken at nightfall on Carter's Creek in the lovely state of Virginia. It is a few coves away from this blue hour image recently posted. The title, "The Edge of Night" may have drawn in a few fans of the soap opera series, for which I apologize, but everyone likes to look at photos, right? :-)

I had given some thought to lightening this image but also considered losing the mood here so it was left in it's "as shot" state.

It was a very peaceful night on Carter's Creek which added another page to the many fond memories I have of this area.

Thanks so much for visiting!
