Lady Maryland

Docked - The Lady Maryland

Welcome to another Friday leading to a great weekend. In this post we have an artistic look at the flagship of the Living Classrooms Foundation, the schooner Lady Maryland. Sitting at the dock, this replica of a Chesapeake Bay schooner, a ship that sailed the waters of the Chesapeake Bay in the 1800's, is used as a floating classroom to provide hands-on education for students of all ages. Shown here is the bow section, but the entire ship is 104 feet in length and was crafted from trees in Maryland.

The image below was taken in Fall of 2011, just before this beauty headed to drydock for some refurbishment work in Fells Point. I understand that the work has now been completed and she is once again afloat so I'll be heading down to look her up and gather some new images to share with you.

A ship so rich in history brings to mind thoughts of how things must have been many years ago when the original schooner was at sea.

Here is a black and white version of the image above.

Lady Maryland

Welcome back, friends. I hope you enjoyed the weekend. Today's image shows the stern of the schooner Lady Maryland, now spending the Winter in Dry-dock for some needed repairs. I snapped this shot in Summer (2011) on a hot and humid day.  The ship was built in 1985 - 1986 with it's mission of serving as a floating classroom. This is the flagship of the Living Classrooms Foundation and has taken thousands of children on educational excursions, teaching them about life on the Chesapeake Bay, it's history and ecosystems.

What an awesome way for students to learn!
