Lightroom 5 Beta

The View Across the Harbor

The view across the harbor in Baltimore.
The view across the harbor in Baltimore.

I have long-favored shooting at the edges of day and night because of the wonderful lighting the exists during those brief periods of time. In the previous post we had an example of a sunrise. Today we take a peek at a sunset in this view across the harbor of Baltimore. What you cannot discern from the image below is the fact that it was bitterly cold on this December evening. The wind was quite low, allowing the water to remain calm and smooth.

Processing

Once again I used the new Lightroom 5 Beta to process this image. I really like what they have done with Lightroom 5 and will write a post on my favorite feature, so far. It's important to know that this public Beta version is a work in progress and may undergo considerable changes before it's final release.

The Bokeh in image enhanced in Photoshop CS6.

Spring Sunrise

This past weekend I went on a long planned outing on the Chesapeake Bay to enjoy the second day of the now open 2013 Rockfish Season. The Rockfish (Morone saxatilis) , also know as the Striped Bassis also the official fish of the State of Maryland and native to the Atlantic Coast. On-board the "0 Dark 30", a wonderful vessel that has carried this name long before the recent movie was even thought about, was the usual suspects. There is a group of 7 of us that always fish together in some combination. Needless to say, I was snap-happy and shot a ton of photographs. Hey, that's what we do, right?

Today's shot was captured on the way out to the Chesapeake Bay from Taylor's Creek on this cold and windy morning. I notice the sky setting up for a wonderful sunrise as the colors began to intensify. I decided to catch the sun just as it came over the horizon so we stopped the boat and waited shortly, creating the image below.

These are the scenes that make you get up super early to capture and after a long busy and sometimes hectic month, I really needed this getaway. :-)

Shot Data

Nikon D5000 fitted with the 18-55mm F/3.5 - 5.6 G Kit lens, 24mm, ISO 200, 1/1000s, F4

I think these kit lenses are often underestimated and overlooked for their ability to produce wonderfully sharp images. We photographers generally like to grab the more expensive, higher quality glass, leaving these sitting in the bag most of the time. No one is more guilty of this than myself. :-)
