Coming in for a Landing

As the summer season begins to fade I reflect back upon the great times experienced during these past months. One such time was my trip to Las Vegas in June. Yes, it was smoking hot in the middle of the desert with triple-digit temperatures each day, but the early mornings and nights were really awesome. During the midday hours we went from one air-conditioned venue to another to avoid the heat. The image below was one of the few taken during the glaring light of midday. I actually took this from my hotel room in the MGM Grand where I could see across to the McCarran International Airport, which made for some interesting sights with all of the aviation traffic.

A Delta Airlines flight with it's landing gear down approaches the runway after coming across the mountains in the background. The foreground structure is the hotel's parking garage. Notice there are no cars on the top level, likely avoided because no one wants to return to a vehicle with temperatures inside exceeding 120 degrees.

Processing

I chose to go B&W with this image for a couple of reasons. As previously mentioned, this was taken through a hotel window and the tinted glass tends to leave a bit of a tinge on the otherwise blue sky. I attempted to fix that in Photoshop but was never really happy with the results, although I think most would not have noticed. in any case, I converted the image to B&W with one of the many presets I have created in Lightroom 4.

Back in Photoshop the B&W version was layered above the color, where I then masked in the color version of the aircraft itself. To complete the task, a little sharpening was added.

Thanks so much for clicking by. ;-)

Poolside

Happy Friday, everyone! After a long hot week with temperatures in the high nineties (F) what could be more relaxing than a dip in the pool? Since I do not have one in my back yard, we will travel back to Las Vegas and dip our toes into a couple of the many pools at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. It was a grand time for sure and I would recommend this outstanding complex if you are ever in Vegas. One of the most beautiful things about cyberspace is the ability to travel anywhere in nanoseconds with a click or two. :-)

We begin with the poolside entrance.

This image was taken around 8:00 am on what would surely be another roasting hot day in the desert. Surprisingly, the morning hours were very pleasant. The intense heat would not arrive until midday.

In the upper portion of this shot you may notice the tracks of the Las Vegas Monorail system, which runs the length of the town in about 7 stops. Great way to get around, it's just a short walk to everything no matter where you exit.

In this pool you can wade, walk or swim a really long distance as this meanders around the pool area. Most of the pools are 3.5 to 4 feet deep, making them fairly safe for swimmers and non-swimmers alike. As you navigate this pool there are many places to get out and rest in the shade, get a relaxing drink or even make a phone call.

Above, you can see one of those nice shady areas previously mentioned.

Here we have one of the watering holes, also know as a poolside bar. This particular one makes some really great frozen tropical drinks, one of which I would have had at the time of this capture had they been open. Hey, I was on vacation and I drink by thirst, not the clock. :-)

What may appear to be smoke is actually a cool water mist. These misting stations are spread around the complex and really come in handy, as you can imagine.

Above we have another relaxing corner of the pool for hanging out. This area also has a conveniently located refreshment stand.

Lastly, we will simply chill out in one of the shaded cabanas, maybe even steal a little nap.

Thanks so much for hanging out and taking a dip. I hope you enjoyed the visit.

Until next time... have a great weekend!
