Coming in for a Landing

As the summer season begins to fade I reflect back upon the great times experienced during these past months. One such time was my trip to Las Vegas in June. Yes, it was smoking hot in the middle of the desert with triple-digit temperatures each day, but the early mornings and nights were really awesome. During the midday hours we went from one air-conditioned venue to another to avoid the heat. The image below was one of the few taken during the glaring light of midday. I actually took this from my hotel room in the MGM Grand where I could see across to the McCarran International Airport, which made for some interesting sights with all of the aviation traffic.

A Delta Airlines flight with it's landing gear down approaches the runway after coming across the mountains in the background. The foreground structure is the hotel's parking garage. Notice there are no cars on the top level, likely avoided because no one wants to return to a vehicle with temperatures inside exceeding 120 degrees.

Processing

I chose to go B&W with this image for a couple of reasons. As previously mentioned, this was taken through a hotel window and the tinted glass tends to leave a bit of a tinge on the otherwise blue sky. I attempted to fix that in Photoshop but was never really happy with the results, although I think most would not have noticed. in any case, I converted the image to B&W with one of the many presets I have created in Lightroom 4.

Back in Photoshop the B&W version was layered above the color, where I then masked in the color version of the aircraft itself. To complete the task, a little sharpening was added.

Thanks so much for clicking by. ;-)

In Flight

Hello everyone! The title of this post somewhat describes my busy and hectic schedule of late, so pardon me for having missed a post or 2 of your latest creations. I'll be catching up soon. I also want to thank you for visiting and taking your time to comment and share. Very much appreciated! ;-)

Today I want to share another image from my stop in Washington DC. This one is from the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, which is wonderfully designed, by the way. We'll have a look at some of the other elements of this location in future post.

Serving as a backdrop to Dr. King's likeness are two pillars that I was photographing. Within this frame, an American Airlines commuter plane enters on it's decent to nearby Reagan National Airport.

Enjoy!

Southwest Airlines Flyover

Welcome to the weekend, TGIF and all of that good stuff! Things have been a bit busier than I had anticipated, but we can shift gears now and get into weekend mode.

To close out the week I thought I would share this shot captured in Columbia Maryland. I was focusing on a water fountain (future post) and could see a plane approaching in the background at a somewhat low altitude. This is not at all unusual in Columbia since the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is a fairly short distance away. Planes passing over this area are likely on the runway in 10 minutes or so.

Anyhow, the plane was quickly approaching so I dismounted the camera from the tripod and fired off 6 frames. The image below was the best of the bunch, as I was able to catch the edge of some trees in the corner, which provides a little reference and scale. The distinctive colors lets us know it's a Southwest Airlines flight.

So here we are, taking off for the weekend. Like most others, it will be a short flight. :-)
