Yankee Point Light

Happy Monday everyone, I hope you enjoyed the weekend. Here in the Mid Atlantic Region ferocious thunderstorms were experienced late Friday evening into Friday night with high winds exceeding 60 mph. Millions of people were without power for most of the weekend in portions of Maryland, Washington DC and Virginia. My home rode through okay, never losing power or sustaining damages but A good portion of Saturday was spent on the phone with friends and family who were in some way affected.

The storms, some of the worst in decades, did bring relief from the 100 plus degree days we've had lately, dropping temperatures to a more summer-like low nineties.

Today I thought I would share a more peaceful scene, leaving the turmoil of Friday in the rear-view mirror. :-)

Below is an image of the boat launch ramp area at the Yankee Point Marina in Lancaster Virginia. I've entitled this post "Yankee Point Light" because of the small lighthouse on the pier. This is not an official light house, it's ornamental and constructed of wood, but does make for a nice navigational aid when coming in during hours of darkness.

At the base of the lighthouse is a cute little doghouse (non-functional) which is screened off to keep out pesky critters. I love this are and the Yankee Point Marina.

A short distance to the left of this view is where I created the image "At Water's Edge". What a peaceful early Sunday morning shoot that was. :-)

Pier Post

Welcome back! Today we have another HDR waterfront scene, looking across the creek as the eyes navigate through a series of pier posts where once a dock stood strong. Perhaps there are plans to rebuild the decking portion but I found this to be an interesting look for some reason. ;-)

To arrive at the result above I started with another 3-shot bracket (-2 to +2), run through HDR Efex Pro, then imported into Photoshop. Once there the overall image was desaturated to make the colors softer.

With the house in the background being partially shaded, it rendered those areas as dark and lacking of detail. For instance, you could not see anything on that screened-in porch, including the screening itself. To remedy this situation I pulled in a +2 exposure layer and masked some of the shaded elements into view, including the stonework on each side of the patio doors.

Those small changes provide big results visually, so taking the time to find small details in an image are well worth the effort. Look for items that provide a subtle contrast.

At Waters Edge

Continuing the theme from the previous post, today we have a look at a few yachts within the Yankee Point Marina in Lancaster Virginia. I took this shot just after sunrise, one of my favorite time to be out photographing. The peace and solitude of the early morning cannot be beat and the soft lighting is a huge plus as well. Anyhow this is one of the many tranquil scenes you'll find at waters edge, which makes this a favorite topic to cover.

Using my trusty Nikkor 18-200mm, this image was created from a 3-shot bracket (-2 to +2), run through HDR Efex Pro, then imported into Photoshop where I applied the "Portrait Drama" filter within Topaz Labs Adjust 5. Initially the colors were a bit too saturated but lowering a saturation slider makes for an easy fix.

Enjoy!
