Blue Hour at Kent Narrows

One of the first small communities you encounter after crossing the Chesapeake Bay from the Maryland mainland (western shore) is Kent Narrows, a waterway community that connects eastern bay tributary and the Chester River. I could see by the sky that the Blue Hour had begun so I stopped to take a few photos in the area on what was a very windy morning. The marina was loaded with boats, all of which were bobbing in the water like corks so a long exposure of watercraft would only yield a blurry image. Instead, I took the image below to  take advantage of the current lighting situation.

As seen above, even the ordinary takes on a different and sometimes surreal look during the blue hours of morning and evening. It's a fun time to be out photographing.

One of the tools I use for specific location shoots is an app developed by Miklos Andrassy.

iPhone / iPad users may employ the assistance of this wonderful app, appropriately named Blue Hour App. It's in the Apple App Store and is advertised as an iPhone app but it works terrific on the iPad as well.

You can choose dates and locations, which is quite handy. Another cool feature is the ability to drop pins on the map, handy for those favorite locations you like to visit or future locations.

The app is not free but at $1.99 it's well worth the small investment.

Thanks for visiting!

A Boatyard in Lancaster

Today we take a quick swing by the boatyard in Lancaster Virginia for a peek at a few of the many boats scattered about for repairs and refurbishments. I've seen boats here from as far away as Seattle Washington, which is one heck of a sail from the east coast. This image was taken a very short distance from this launch ramp and this image at water's edge, all a part of the Yankee Point Marina.

When I first saw this image I knew I wanted to convert it to B&W, so here it is below.

Processing took place in Lightroom 4 before exporting to Photoshop for a couple of final tweaks.

As always, thanks so much for visiting.
