The great outdoors continues to call with our edge of the pond image today. Like the previous post, a nice place to sit and enjoy the weather is the subject of the photograph. Grasses and trees have yet to show signs of new life in the late Winter scene. But what a great day it was as the the warm breezes from down south were visiting and providing incentive to be outdoors.

This pond is located on the 200 acre "Friendly Farms"  in Upperco, Baltimore County. A family style restaurant opened there in 1959 and remains a popular place to this day.

Below is a black and white version.

Farm Life

Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend and was afforded the opportunity to enjoy friends and family.

Now that the first quarter of 2012 is in the books it's time to kick things up a notch. I am so looking forward to the months ahead where I can break from what has become routine and challenge myself while reaching for another level in photography. This is easier said than done and therein lies the challenge. In any case, I'm pumped about the future. :-)

Today we have a simplistic farm scene, one routinely found on many rural roads. There is no magical sky or other elements that produce the immediate wow factor but I was drawn to the stark white buildings contrasted by the earth tones of the surrounding property. This was truly a drive-by as I simply pulled over a few months ago, used the car window as a mount and racked out the 18-200mm and fired off a couple of brackets.

In post-processing I aligned the images and gave the stack a generous crop before running them through HDR Efex Pro. They were not my best hand-helds so a little work up front likely avoided some ghosting on the back end. Finishing touches included the Topaz Adjust Portrait Drama filter, found in the Vibrant Collection.

Seeing how this farm was a fair distance from the roadway and in mid-morning sunlight, I was happy with the result.

Have a great day, friends!

Down on the Farm

I passed one of my old shooting spots recently, a patch of high ground overlooking an expressway on one side and farmland on the other. But after driving a mile or 2 I decided to turn back for some reason. I knew this spot had pretty much played out with me, hell, I've shot from every angle conceivable but continued back anyway. When I got to my usual vantage point I was immediately reminded of why I should return. There is a farm down below that I wanted to photo back in the early Summer but everything was too green and boring at the time. Now that it's Fall, the green grass and trees have turned and some contrast now exists. My mental note of returning during this season was quite clear now.

Enjoy!

I shot this as the Sun was setting but the problem is that the farm is in the east and the western view is pretty lousy from where I was standing, except for a really nice sky. Well, can't have everything so a plain, no-drama sky it is. ;-)

Below, an alternative selection.
