Long After Harvest

Long after harvest on what is typically a busy farm, there is silence as the wind blows around the dusting of snow that has fallen during the overnight. It's a cold and cloudy day, no mid-winter sunrise on this morning. Only the rustling of  the  closely cut wheat that was harvested months ago. But there is something to be said about barns on a farm and the peaceful scenes they present. Perhaps that is why I am always on the lookout for them.

I encountered this scene while out driving on an 18 degree (F) morning. The wind had howled all night long and it seemed the world was empty as everyone must have decided to stay indoors. The only individuals in the area were a few ice fisherman who were shoveling off a portion of a nearby by lake so they could bore a hole or two.

Processing

This began as a 3-shot bracket, which I decided to simply stack in Photoshop CS6. As photographers we often see one vision in the field and even on the camera's display, only to see something totally different when uploaded to the computer.

The sky was a dingy shade of gray with clouds rendered it a distraction of sorts to the entire image. One of those strange nature things I guess. After applying a mask to the zero exposure, I then brightened the sky for a cleaner look. That seemed to change everything.

Before closing out, we share this black & white conversion with you.

Til the Cows Come Home

While looking back through one of last year's (2012) catalogs, I came upon this image taken one full year ago. It was an early morning drive through farm country and I saw the cows milling about not far from the property's fence. I slowed the vehicle, grabbed my camera off of the passenger seat and grabbed the image below right out of the car window. Somehow it ended up collecting dust on the external hard drive while it awaited it's fate. Deciding to get it off of the storage drive and do something with it, I processed it with the result below.

While processing, the image was given a generous crop to reduce the large sky caught within the frame and cleaned up a bit using Topaz's Denoise 5.

A black and white conversion seemed in order for this timeless scene,  so I ran the image through Topaz's Black & White Effects.
