Heading to Port

Welcome back! In the previous post I mentioned how summer had started to fade, and nowhere was that more evident than in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic US states this past weekend. The transition began with extremely severe thunderstorms from New York to Virginia, complete with tornado sightings and torrential rains. But everyone knew what was coming as there was plenty of advanced warning.

The image below shows one of many boats and watercraft heading to port to find safe harbor and security. On the open seas things happen rapidly so no need to wait around.

This sailboat is running on engine power, no time for sails with storms just hours away.

Processing

This is a single exposure processed in Photoshop, using the "Dramatic II" filter found in Topaz Adjust 5 under the "Vibrant Collection" tab. I then desaturated the colors to complete the process. Topaz Labs has a host of creative tools that provide a nice starting point for where one may want to take a particular image stylistically.

Houseboat

Welcome back! In today's short post, we visit a common sight found in and around many harbors. They come in all shapes, sizes and conditions and many are somewhat luxurious.

The houseboat can be a very interesting structure and I have always wondered what life is like living in one, although they are not for me long term. As much as I love the water, I would never consider one to be home sweet home. But everyone has to live somewhere and this houseboat, as they say, looks lived in. Much like a house on land, it has the family car boat parked in the driveway. ;-)

Happy Friday everyone! Weekends often provide time for some fun and relaxation, moments to gather your thoughts or to pursue your favorite pastime. Whatever the case, here's to a great one filled with memories. I'll be busy on Saturday but a 1/2 weekend will do nicely as well. ;-)

We close out the week with a peaceful scene of a sailboat anchored in the harbor during the blue hour. It was around 5:40 am, which is one of my favorite times to be out and about, chasing that short-lived twilight. There is something very special about this time of day, beyond the special lighting available to us photogs. There is that solitude and brief period to connect with nature, uninterrupted.

Well, before I go off waxing philosophical, let's get on to today's image.

Safe Harbor

Before diving in I want to thank everyone for your comments, retweets, and continued support here and in places like Google Plus and 500px. It is truly appreciated.  ;-) In today's short post we have a look at a B&W image captured during my last visit to Harve de Grace Maryland. A light fog still hovered above the trees in the background but it served as a bit of a distraction as opposed to  adding to the mood. With that in mind I felt it best to go mono on this one. I used the +2 exposure to bring out the rocks below the decking, which was originally too dark to show much detail.
